Preview

The Arizona Diamondbacks wrap up their Independence Day weekend at home on Sunday, July 5, hosting the Milwaukee Brewers at Chase Field for a 4:00 PM ET first pitch. Eduardo Rodriguez gets the ball for Arizona, squaring off against Brewers right-hander Brandon Sproat. With the D-backs looking to build momentum heading deeper into the summer, this is exactly the kind of home game Arizona needs to protect — facing a Milwaukee club that brings a legitimate lineup featuring Christian Yelich and breakout star Jackson Chourio.

Pitching Matchup: Eduardo Rodriguez vs. Brandon Sproat

Rodriguez has been a key piece of Arizona's rotation since arriving in the desert, and Sunday's start is a chance for him to reassert himself as a reliable arm at the top of the staff. The left-hander has the experience and the arsenal to keep Milwaukee's offense off-balance, but he'll need to work efficiently and avoid falling behind in counts against a lineup that can make you pay.

On the other side, Brandon Sproat is a name Brewers fans are getting to know. The young right-hander will be tested by one of the more dynamic lineups in the National League West. Sproat's ability to command the strike zone and miss bats will be scrutinized in a Chase Field environment that can get loud fast when the D-backs get rolling.

Keys to Watch

Corbin Carroll's Continued Development

Batting third, Carroll remains the engine of this offense. If he can get on base early and put pressure on Sproat, Arizona's middle of the lineup — anchored by Gabriel Moreno hitting cleanup — has the chance to do real damage. A hot Carroll makes the entire D-backs attack more dangerous.

Containing Yelich and Chourio

Milwaukee's 3-4-5 in the batting order is no joke. Yelich is a former MVP who can still punish mistake pitches, and Chourio is one of the most electrifying young players in baseball. Rodriguez has to be sharp and trust his defense behind him. If either of those bats gets going early, it could be a long afternoon.

The Bottom Third of Arizona's Order

Tim Tawa at third, Pavin Smith at first, and Tommy Troy in center will face questions against any quality pitching. If Sproat finds a rhythm, he'll attack this portion of the order. Arizona's best chance is to turn the lineup over quickly and let Marte and Perdomo set the table again.

Prediction

Chase Field is a factor on a hot July afternoon, and Arizona's lineup has enough firepower to give any young pitcher trouble. Rodriguez has the experience edge in this matchup, and if he can navigate the Yelich-Chourio-Vaughn stretch without major damage, the D-backs should have enough offense to get the job done. Arizona wins, 5-3, taking the series and heading into the week with some positive momentum.
