Preview

The Arizona Diamondbacks head to Pittsburgh for a Monday night matchup against the Pirates, with first pitch at PNC Park set for 6:40 PM ET on July 27. Merrill Kelly takes the ball for Arizona opposite Mitch Keller, giving this one a genuine pitchers-duel feel. With the regular season deep into its second half, every game in the standings carries weight, and the D-backs can't afford to give away winnable road contests against a Pirates club that fields a capable lineup top to bottom.

Probable Pitchers: Merrill Kelly vs. Mitch Keller

Kelly has been a consistent presence in Arizona's rotation and gets the call here in what should be a competitive environment at PNC Park. He'll need to command the zone against a Pirates lineup that features Bryan Reynolds in the three-hole — one of the more dangerous left-handed bats in the National League — along with leadoff man Jake Mangum setting the table from center field. If Kelly can limit damage in the middle of that Pittsburgh order, Arizona's offense has enough firepower to make it a long night for Keller.

Keller has shown the ability to frustrate opposing lineups with his mix and command. He'll face a D-backs order that Arizona manager personnel have constructed with Corbin Carroll at the top, Geraldo Perdomo hitting second, and Gabriel Moreno slotted third. Ketel Marte bats cleanup, which is exactly where you want your best bat when you need a run. Max Kepler, Tyler Locklear, and Adrian Del Castillo fill out the middle of the order, giving Arizona legitimate threats from spots five through seven.

Keys to Watch for Arizona

  • Carroll at the top: Corbin Carroll leading off means Arizona wants him on base early and often. If he can get on against Keller in the first inning and Perdomo works a quality at-bat behind him, the D-backs can manufacture pressure before Marte ever steps in.
  • Kelly vs. Reynolds: Bryan Reynolds hitting third for Pittsburgh is the matchup that could define Kelly's night. Keeping Reynolds in the park and off the bases will go a long way toward preserving Arizona's bullpen for later innings.
  • Moreno's bat in the three-hole: Gabriel Moreno batting third is a statement of confidence. His ability to make contact and drive runners in from scoring position could be critical if Carroll and Perdomo do their jobs at the top of the order.
  • Road discipline: PNC Park is a beautiful ballpark and a tough road environment. Arizona needs to stay disciplined at the plate against Keller and avoid the big inning that can swing a close game Pittsburgh's way.

Prediction

This one figures to be tight through six innings, with two competent starters matching up in what should be a low-scoring affair early. Arizona's lineup has the depth to break through, and if Marte delivers in a key spot, the D-backs have enough to pull out a road win. Give Arizona the edge in a 4-2 final, with Kelly going six solid and the bullpen closing it out. Catch it on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM or DBACKS.TV.
